Latin Name:
Blighia

Physical Description:
The fruit is shaped like a pear and has three large black seeds; when ripe it goes from green to bright red to yellow-orange. The flowers are greenish-white with five petals and the tree is an evergreen.
Usage:
Ackee is commonly used in Caribbean cuisine. In Jamaica, Ackee, salt fish and fried dumplings are a traditional breakfast. Ackee is poisonous if not prepared correctly. The proper way to prepare Ackee is to wait for the fruit pods to open on the tree, clean it, removing the seeds and the outer skin. After cleaning it, boil it, and dump out the water.
Factoids:
The fruit is also known as "soap fruit" because the young fruit (pre-flower) can be used as a soap.
