Asian Pear

Pyrus pyrifolia

Physical Description: 

The trees bloom around April and have large and fragrant white flowers with five petals.

Usage: 

They are a great "pocket fruit", and also can shaved into delicious salads, such as Korean yukhoe salad with raw beef, spices and eggs. They are delicious in meat marinades. Because of their high water content, they do not dry or cook down as well as their European counterparts. They store well in a root cellar.

Factoids: 

Asian Pears (also known as Pear Apples) are a pear variety native to North-eastern Asia. Pears are a popular symbol of Springtime in East Asia.
