I was doing some reseach on the health outcomes of increased consumption of fruits and vegetables and stumbled upon these awsome maps showing fruit and vegetable consumption by date!

Percentage of U.S. adults aged ≥ 18 years who consumed fruit two or more times per day and vegetables three or more times per day, by state.

 

Did you know that 15.5% of the waste in California is food waste? Shocking, isn't it!? And that approximately 200 million pounds of fruit from urban sources goes to waste, most of it landfilled?

Here at Neighborhood Fruit, we're pretty passionate about increasing access for all people to affordable and healthy food sources, and eliminating waste. Today, we found a kindred spirit, Johnathan Bloom writes for the Wasted Food Blog and is currently writing a book about food waste in America. His blog is smart, well researched and funny.

We got this appeal from a soup kitchen in the Tri-Valley area in Northern California, and thought we'd pass it on:
I run a soup kitchen in the Tri-Valley area in California. That is Pleasanton, Livermore and Dublin.
I serve 3,500 meals a week and I am always in need of fresh fruit. If any one would like to donate
their fruit they can do so by calling Wendy Weathers, Operations Manager at Open Heart Kitchen

If you are not within 11 miles of my area please consider the food pantries and soup kitchens in
your area.
