Physical Description:
The Cornelian Cherry is small tree or shrub member of the dogwood family. They have brown branches and greenish twigs. The small white or yellow flowers appear in the late winter before the leaves sprout. The fruits are small and round with one seed, and they turn dark red when they're ripe.
Usage:
Because they are extremely sour, people tend to cook Cornelian Cherries into syrups, jams, and sauces. They are made into vodka in Azerbaijan. They can also be eaten dried or salted.
Factoids:
The wood of the Cornelian Cherry tree is so dense that it sinks in water! Because of this density, the wood is popular to make into tool handles and machine parts.
