Guava

Latin Name:

Psidium guayava

Physical Description:

The Guava is a small tree with thin copper-colored bark that flakes off, revealing a greenish layer. The leaves are fragrant when crushed and are evergreen and oval or oblong-elliptic shaped. The fruit is green, ellipsoid and size of chicken egg.

Usage:

Guava fruit is often referred as "superfruit" due to the high vitamin C content (four times more than an orange!), as well as vitamin A, omegas 3 and 6, potassium and magnesium. They're excellent eaten raw or juiced. Since they are rich in pectin, they make great jam, preserve, candy and marmalade. Even the flower petals of Guava are sweet and edible!

Factoids:

The wood of the Guava tree is highly prized for wood carving and making into children's toys (such as spinning tops).
