Hog Plums

Spondias dulcis

Physical Description: 

Hog Plums have pointy flat leaves, growing on opposite sides of the straight, grayish branches from one another. Hog plums grow in clusters and come in many colors: red, green, yellow and orange.

Usage: 

Hog Plums have a leathery skin covering a thin layer of pink or yellow pulp, structurally similar to an avocado. The fruit can be eaten fresh, juiced, concentrated, made into sherbet or jellied. The large seed has a high oil content.

Factoids: 

In Traditional Surinamese Medicine, the leaves are infused to treat eye inflammation, diarrhea and venereal disease.
