Physical Description:
Japanese dogwood trees have dark green leaves with deep crinkled veining. They are short with a wide crown. When flowering, they are resplendent with color and showy blossoms. The fruits resemble pink, spiky cherries, and continue to ripen until they fall off the tree.
Usage:
Dogwood fruit are most commonly eaten fresh. They are popular with squirrels and birds.
Factoids:
Because the wood of the dogwood tree is dense and hard, it was popular for the manufacture of daggers, hand tools, looms shuttles and the fruit presses.
