Jujube

Latin Name:

Ziziphus zizyphus

Physical Description:

The pointed bright green/yellow leaves grow abundantly on thin, springy boughs. The tree has a thin trunk and angled branches. When ripe, the fruit is brown, and it resembles dates.

Usage:

Jujubes are most commonly consumed dried. The dried fruits are infused along ginseng, herbs, bats, snakes or rats in traditional Chinese medicinal liquor preparations. They also make a great addition to chrysanthemum blossom and "8 Treasures" teas.

Factoids:

In the Himalaya and Karakoram Mountains, it is believed that the fragrance of jujubes causes teenagers to fall in love (as if they needed help, right?), so young men tuck the blossoms into their hat bands. In China, along with walnuts, jujubes are put in the bedrooms of newlyweds to symbolize fertility.
