Nectarine

Latin Name:

Prunus persica

Physical Description:

Nectarine trees have thin, bright green, heart-shaped leaves, and grow on smallish trees with grey-brown bark.

Usage:

Nectarines bruise easily, so store them in hard-sided containers! They are great eaten raw or on salads, and they can be made into jams, jellies and syrups.

Factoids:

Nectarines are not a cross between a peach and a plum, as is commonly believed, in fact the fuzzless skin of the nectarine is caused by a recessive gene of the peach. The "fuzz gene" is the dominant one.
