Pears are related to apples, but have more "grit" than apples. There are many varieties of pear with varying leaf shape and structure.
Usage:
Pears are great raw, or poached in red wine and sugar as a fall dessert. They are often made into hard cider.
Factoids:
The ancient Greeks cultivated pears. They did not eat them raw, they only ate them poached.
