Persimmon

Latin Name:

Diospyros kaki

Physical Description:

The leaves are dark green, and somewhat heart shaped. Persimmons are light safety orange to dark Chinese red, and can be acorn, pumpkin or round shaped.

Usage:

Depending on variety and ripeness, the persimmon can be a great "pocket fruit" or can be good to make cookies and baked good with. They're good on salads or cooked with meats. Caution: do not eat unripend persimmons, as they contain a tannin which can turn into a bezoar in the stomach.

Factoids:

Persimmons were known to the Ancient Greeks as the Fruit of the Gods, although name comes form the Powhattan language. The tree is in the Ebony family. Most people don't know, but persimmons are a "true berry".
