Physical Description:
Pistachios grow on small trees with curving leaves. They grow in a cluster as individuals that turn from green to yellowish-red and splits open when ripe. They have a biennial production cycle, meaning they produce more one year and less the following year.
Usage:
Pistachios can be eaten raw or roasted. They are delicious in Middle Eastern candies. They also can be made into butter or ice cream.
Factoids:
Shipping containers full of pistachios have been known to self-heat and spontaneously combust because of their high fat and low water content. Exploding nuts!
