Rosemary

Latin Name:

Rosmarinus officinalis

Physical Description:

Rosemary is a small shrub with white stalks, purple flowers and small spiky leaves. The leaves are commonly used as an herb.

Usage:

Rosemary can be added to baked chicken and fish, pickle blends or used to make salad dressing. A more exotic use of rosemary is rosemary-cucumber-lemonade.

Factoids:

In the Middle Ages in Europe, sprigs of rosemary would be hung outside the house to protect from witchcraft. The practice evolved into planting rosemary in the gardens, and took on the meaning that where rosemary grew big and strong, the household was ruled by a woman. As a result, it was common for men in the 16th century to tear up rosemary plants in their garden to assert their dominance.
