Physical Description:
Sassafras trees are tall and slender with many branches and smooth orange-brown bark. They have three different shapes of leaves: oval-shaped, mitten-shaped, and three-pronged.
Usage:
The dried and powdered leaves can be used to make filé, a spice used in gumbo.
Factoids:
The roots used to be used to make sassafras, an alternative to root beer, but it was discovered by the FDA that the oil contained in the roots contained toxins that cause liver damage.
